ipod.jpgDoes your iPod not play music? Does it refuse to be restored by iTunes? Is your iPod not recognized by iTunes? Is your iPod First Generation identified as a device in “Recovery Mode”? Is your iPod Second Generation identified as an “USB DFU Device?

Apple today, has released the iPod Reset Utility 1.0.3 through its software update application which is set to solve all the above mentioned problems in iPod First and Second generations

The company issued statement states “Use iPod Reset Utility to restore the following iPod models back to their factory settings, when iTunes is unable to do so: iPod shuffle (1st Generation) and iPod shuffle (2nd Generation). The restore process completely erases all music and data on your iPod, and installs current iPod software on it.”

iPod Reset utility is only for the first generation (iPod software version 1.1.5) and second generations of iPod shuffle and not meant for other iPod models. Administrator privileges is required to use this utility on your system with requirements Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later (Mac OS X 10.2.8 customers with an iPod shuffle (1st generation) can use the iPod shuffle Reset Utility) or Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4, Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (iPod Reset Utility 1.0.3 is not supported for use with Windows Vista).

Once the entire installation procedure is complete, at /Applications/Utilities/iPod Reset Utility on a Mac or on Windows by choosing Start > Programs > iPod > iPod Reset Utility, the Reset Utility can be found.

Excellent idea. Several people I know have had this problem. The only downside for me though is that I do not have the specific iPod models that will work with the reset utility. I wonder if it will be available for all models in the future?

This is a very good utility, but I think it would be better if they can create a utility that can automatically detect the hardware and give options for it rather than creating different utilities for each type. That way they can minimize the possible damages for using incorrect utilities for their iPod.

I never know that they don’t have one before. I guess that I’m not just updated yet. It’s been a long time since I have visited this blog and I think that its time to get myself updated on the subjects. This has to be one of the best utilities for Ipod.

Nice little utility, what I would Apple to do, is to embed an MP3 which when your battery life was say down to 5% would actually cut across the song you were listening to to give you some notice on your re-charging, makes me mad when I’m at the gym and it cuts off mid song…grrrrrr

I have had to use the utility reset on my ipod before. It works great…you don’t have to bring it into the store to see what is wrong with the ipod. Usually this works, once it didn’t work and that was because my battery kept dying very fast. But other than that the utility reset works very well.
