apple_software_updater.jpgOver a hundred million iPods sold to, most of it to Windows users. Apple has of course taken a decision that would boost its Safari usage by relying on its humongous iTunes base. By bundling the latest version of their web browser Safari and giving the Windows users who download the iTunes software to use their iPods, Apple is trying to push uninitiated users into using Safari even if they have never installed it before.

It appears to be a blatant attempt by Apple to underhandedly use the leverage provided by its software update mechanism and push its way into the crowd of Internet browsers including Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox and hike its way up the usage statistics.

Last June, Apple CEO Steve Jobs had hinted at this possibility. Apple is looking for ways to grow its browser market share, which Jobs said currently is at about 5 percent. Jobs said that Apple plans to use iTunes as a distribution vehicle for Safari for Windows. He noted that there are a million downloads of iTunes a day, with 500 million of those going to Windows machines.

While analysts have widely interpreted this move as an antecedent to iPhone improvement and as a supplement of Apple’s present tendency to work with the Windows world in mind, Mozilla has gone ahead and criticized the endeavor as “disservice to Windows users everywhere by including its Safari browser as a default add-on installation in the latest iTunes update.”

In spite of criticisms, it remains to be seen if Apple has in store. The present they say is when no one can go wrong going the Apple way.

I think apple can do that but they have to ensure that the safari version that they will include in the package is really well designed to run on windows so problems will not arise. Including it as a default for the product package is one way of marketing other products of apple.

I think apple have used there brains, as this is a good way of getting their browser out to windows users, allthough some might say it’s sneaky or misleading, but it is still clever. Like the comment above says as long as the version of safari has no problems on windows, I personally don’t think people will actually mind.
