appleglassesAn interesting and new patent application has surfaced from the ingenious quarters of Apple yet again. Apple is now working on a ‘head mounted display system’, which has been described as a method for displaying images within a goggle-like headset which the user wears to use. Of course, you have already heard of these displays and such goggles and they already exist. However, what’s new is that, Apple has additionally described a laser engine that is separate from the goggle itself. Instead, it has been said to be a separate device, which produces the laser light, which is then piped into the headset. This sufficiently reduces the overall bulk of the goggles and makes it light weight and easy to carry around. “A user simply plugs their handheld video player such as the iPod manufactured by Apple Computer of Cupertino, Calif., into the compact laser engine attached to their belt, and places the headset on their head. The user then selects a video to be played at the handheld video player (viewing through transparent display elements).”

Another interesting description is that when the unit is not being used to play videos, it can double up as normal glasses. No images are created when the video option is not in use and therefore, the display unit is clear and is just like your normal glasses. In fact, Apple has gone to the extent of suggesting that the headset be provided with lenses as well so that you can use them for day to day wear and watch your videos on them as well.
