o2phoneTelefonica of O2 fame and Apple, it has been heard are all set to make a joint announcement, soon in the “coming weeks,” prompting widely speculation that the U.S. firm is on the verge of announcing the highly awaited and eagerly anticipated new third-generation model of its iPhone.

Mobile operator O2, as we know, has secured the right to sell the iPhone in Ireland and Britain and last month it endeavored to cut prices for the most basic version by 100 pounds in the UK. Recently, as we have reported, the 8GB and the 16GB versions of the iPhones were cleared off the shelves of O2 and were rendered ‘currently unavailable’ on the Apple stores online. Apple analysts world over, interpreted this as a clear sign that Apple and O2 were attempting to clear shelf space ahead of what is expected to be the launch of a new model that will run on faster 3G networks. The anticipation for the new model has reached a feverish pitch and speculations fly back and forth whether Apple will be releasing the same this WWDC 2008. Apple however, has declined to comment.

Matthew Key, chief executive of Telefonica O2 Europe, told reporters on a conference call after his group’s results that Telefonica and Apple would make a joint statement over the coming weeks but he declined to say whether it would be about 3G iPhones. “It is broadly known we are now out of stock of the 8 gigabyte and we have got some 16 gigabytes left,” Key said in a separate interview.

I wonder why they would pull everything off the shelves. Wouldn’t that hurt sales for a little while? I mean granted the new generation of iphones will be coming out, but why pull all the ones they have now if they haven’t even made an official statement?

Interesting. It’d be great if these discounts find their way over to the USA. Apple has always had a good business strategy when it comes to these hi tech gadgets. I suppose with the way the internet works those older modles will still be around for a while.

This is actually a good move by Apple. They pulled off the currents Models so that the current customers won’t be sad or angry that after 2 months a newer model has come. Apple really knows how to keep their customers happy.

The new BETA 2.0 firmware already has option to turn off 3G. Lets hope Apple launches the new Black iPhone soon next month.

And I personally think Apple should sell Unlocked iPhones everywhere now. Australia already has it. Other countries too should follow….

That is good news on Ireland and Britain because they could enjoy the new technology on their country. I wonder when it will be available on my country. Is this available on the Philippines too?
Those 3G Iphones sure does know how to make a good approach to the market.

3G for the iPhone is good news. Apple just keeps on enhancing their products step by step, and that’s a good move. Clearing out old models would lessen competition with their new model to be released, so Apple is doing the right thing.
