Apple’s iPhone 3G was announced earlier this month and is all ready to begin shipping on July 11. This monumental release has taken away the spotlight from its dear cousin; the iPod touch. The new iPhone is now cheaper than the iPod touch (excluding monthly service fees) and has a fast, always-on Internet connection, which the iPod doesn’t.
However there still exists a huge market for the iPod touch, such as people who don’t want to pay a minimum $70 per month for phone and data service, people who use non-AT&T (T) wireless carriers, and people who like keeping their mobile phone and MP3 player separate.
Of course, no one expects Apple to leave the iPod touch alone. But if it’s going to become the first “mainstream wi-fi mobile platform,” as the company has been calling it, it needs some improvements. Specifically, enthusiast would definitely like to see:
- More storage for the same price. The 16-gig unit should drop to $299; the 32-gig unit to $399. (An 8-gig iPhone will cost $199 after carrier subsidy; a 16-gig iPhone will cost $299.)
- A camera. The iPhone’s camera is a novelty, but it’s a useful one, and we’d like to see it on the touch, too. Video recording also makes sense, especially with a 32-gig drive.
- Mic and speakers. People are going to use this as a wi-fi Internet phone. So it’d be helpful if Apple included a microphone. Speakers would be nice so a small group could listen to tunes or calls.
- A bigger version. Increasing the screen size to five or seven inches would make movie-watching and Web-browsing much better. Load it up with enough features and capabilities, and you’re looking at a mini-tablet computer, and there’s a substantial market for that.
Some of these changes could come as early as this fall. We don’t expect Apple to do much to the iPod touch during the back-to-school shopping season — during which they’re giving away iPod touches to Mac buyers. But sometime around mid-October, when people start sniffing for holiday presents, Apple might just present the iPod Touch in its new avatar.
What do you think should be included in the iPod Touch’s next version? Your voice might just lend inspiration to innovation.

I think a camera is what we’ve all wanted on the iPod for years, it would be awesome if I could just whip out my iPod and have a 3+ gig camera on it. It would mean when I’m out and about that I only have to carry one device instead of two.

Rightly said Kenada, it would be amazing to whip out a 3mp camera from your iPod, but iPod has a dedicated user and fan following, and lower prices of iPhone can’t take that way at all.

The camera on the ipod does sound really cool. Like a lot of people I would rather keep my phone separate from the mp3 player. I love my ipod and I love my phone. I would love to have an iphone but at the same time I can’t be paying $70/month for a phone…

I don’t like a separate phone and an mp3 player but if I had one I’d like it to have a camera, a voice recorder, FM radio, note pad, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection, some games you see on mobile phones, and maybe a browser for easier access of music files on the net.

Actually to me it seems that iPhone is an upgradation to iPod touch, they may would have planned touch before iPhone, Just a thinking but who knows. For me iPhone seems to be an upgraded iPod touch with phone capabilities, and that says for its weak phone capabilities.

I’m in favor of getting all my gadgets in one place so I don’t have to have 30 things in my purse, or in my car everywhere I go. It just makes sense to me that eventually the ipod would have a camera as well.
